What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a health care and preventive medicine system that was developed in India more than 5,000 years ago. The word comes from Ayus, or “life,” and Veda, or “knowledge” or “science.” Therefore, it is translated as “the science or knowledge of life.”
Ayurvedic medicine offers practical tools, knowledge and information to live in balance and in fullness.
A holistic view of medicine?
Yes. Ayurveda is a healing system that treats the whole person — the integration of body, mind, and spirit — rather than just treating individual symptoms. This medicine takes a step further, treating people not as isolated individuals, but as an inseparable part of all existence.
What are the principles of Ayurveda?
It teaches how to get in touch with our own inner intelligence (the mind), balancing it and then extending that harmony to the rest of the body.
Ayurvedic principles for restoring and maintaining this balance are as follows:
- Take time each day to calm your mind (meditate).
- Eat according to your constitutional type (dosha).
- Practice yoga daily to increase flexibility, strength, and keep your cardiovascular system in shape.
- Sleep well.
- Eliminate what is not at your service (what makes us lose time, toxic friendships, unnecessary attitudes …)
What is the relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda?
Yoga and Ayurveda are two closely related disciplines, both coming from the Vedic belief systems that originated in India. On the one hand, Ayurveda is the science of healing for body and mind, and on the other, Yoga is the science that helps to maintain the balance between both spheres.
Since both have been developed in parallel and complementary, those who are interested in one could benefit from studying the other.
